New York City Diary + some tips

I can´t believe that I´ve been in New almost one month ago. I was most excited for New York, since I only got to spend 3 days there in 2013 and I didn´t see a lot. Therefore, I was really happy that we planned 5 days in this amazing city. We arrived on Friday via an Amtrak-train from Washington D.C. and went to our Hotel first.

HOTEL

We stayed in the Hotel Vetiver in Long Island City. The subway station is about 100m away from the hotel and you can easily reach Times Square within 20min in the Subway. I can´t really say anything bad about the hotel since we only slept there and didn´t spent so much time in our room. However, for my next New York visit, I´ll probably look on Airbnb for an apartment.

MoMA

Every Friday there are so-called "Free Friday Nights" at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) where you can enter the museum for free after 4:00 pm. I highly recommend a visit to MoMA as I´ve never seen such an amazing art collection. You have to know though, that the Free Friday nights are very popular and it´s really crowdy in there.

ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER

For saturday morning we booked tickets for the One World Trade Center, which only opened this past May. The building is next to Ground Zero and from the Observatory you have a 360 degree view of the city. Two years ago, I visited the Top Of The Rock, which is amazing, but the OWO is a great alternative.

STATEN ISLAND FERRY

From there you can easily get to the Staten Island Ferry. This ferry connects Manhattan and Staten Island and leaves every 30 minutes. The good thing is that it is for free, so you can save money for a water taxi and still see the Statue of Liberty.

SHOPPING
Was wäre New York ohne etwas Shopping?

Who doesn´t think about shopping when you hear New York? The first street that comes in mind usually is 5th Avenue. My mom and I whent there in the afternoon and you can find everything there from brands like Zara or Forever 21 to all big designers. I recommend you to start close to Central Park. We made a huge mistake by starting at the 23rd street and walking all the way up.
You can also shop great in Soho, where great brands like Brandy Melville or Urban Outfitters are located as well as different designers.
In West Village you can also find great stores, which vary in their prices.
Close to the One World Trade Center you can also go to Century 21 ( 22 Courtlandt Street), a department store which sells designer brands on sale, often 70% off. You can find designers such as Jimmy Choo, DVF, Equipment or Marc Jacobs there, just keep your eyes open.

 WEST VILLAGE

We spend our sunday morning in West Village. It´s so beautiful there and especially Washington Square Park is great to relax. You almost think that you´re not in hectic New York anymore when you stroll through the streets of West Village. You can find great architecture here as well as a lot of stores, restaurants and the famous Magnolia Bakery. To stroll around Bleecker street and the side streets are great.

Close to West Village and Soho is Chinatown and Little Italy. Here, you can also find a lot of restaurants, which are also not too expensive. On sundays, there are often some street-markets.

BROOKLYN

You defenitely have to visit Brooklyn when in New York. This borough was only on my radar because of the Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge and the Smorgasburg Food Market. I especially liked the streets close to the Brooklyn Bridge Park and Brooklyn Heights. The architecture  and the streets with beautiful trees remind me of the West Village, which I also like a lot. In my next New York visit, I defenitely have to spend more time in Brooklyn.
I also highly recommend you to go to Columbia Heights in the evening to watch the sunset. From there you have an amazing vew of the skyline of Manhattan.

HELICOPTER FLIGHT

I was one lucky person when I received a helicopter flight in New York for my birthday. It was one of the best experiences ever. The view is amazing and you just want to photograph everything. The helicopters leave at Pier 6 and my flight was 15 minutes long.

HIGH LINE

The High Line is a really great place to relax, but also to explore the city from "above" without all the traffic and cars. I would describe the High Line as a green oasis, with a lot of trees, water, ice and chairs you can relax in. Close to the High Line, Chelsea Market is located, a food market with great shops to eat- defenitely worth a visit.

CENTRAL PARK

On our last day we decided to explore Central Park. Since we walked a lot the last days, we rented some bikes. There are a lot of bike rentals, but the prices vary a lot. Sometimes you can order the bikes online and safe some money. Since you can only ride the bikes on specific roads, we walked through Central Park by foot afterwards.

TRANSPORTATION

On our first day we purchased a 7 day unlimited pass for the subway which was about 30$. At the beginning it´s a little bit tricky to find the way but you´ll easily get used to it. We didn´t use a cab during our stay.
