TRAVEL: BARCELONA CITY GUIDE

Barcelona has been on my travel bucket list for quite some time now, so I am really happy that I finally made it to this amazing city about 3 weeks ago. I explored this city literally by foot, as I was walking about 10 km each day, but I believe that this is the best way to get to know a city. I already mentioned in my last travel post (here) that Barcelona is a paradise for foodies, but it is also a paradise for architecture and shopping lovers as well. What to do and where to shop? Read my answers to these questions in todays city guide.

 WHAT TO DO:

The easiest and cheapest way to get around Barcelona is the Metro. I bought a T10 ticket which allows you 10 single rides for only 10€ making each ride only 1€. I also imagine it to be fun biking arount the city or maybe renting a scooter.

1.BARRI GOTIC

The Gothic quarter of the city is defenitely a must-see when in Barcelona. Here, you can find the cathedral of Barcelona (for all flea market lovers: there is a little antiques market right in front of it), beautiful buildings and narrow streets. You should defenitely go to the Placa Reial (the second picture) with its classicistic buildings and the palm trees - one of my favorite places in Barcelona.

When my parents came back from their Barcelona trip two months ago, they said that El Born would be a place for me - they were so right! The quarter is next to the Gothic quarter and you can find plenty of concept stores, small boutiques, restaurants and quiet streets in here - so much love!

La Barceloneta is the beach of Barcelona ( where the amazing W Hotel is located as well). You can easily walk along to the boardwalk to the Port Olimpic from here (about 1,5km). When you want to spend some time chilling on the beach, I can recommend to look for a spot closet to the Port Olimpic because it will not be as crowded. By the way, Brunch & Cake by the sea is located at La Barceloneta as well!

4. SAGRADA FAMILIA

The Sagrada Familia is one of the most impressive places I have ever been - it left me speechless! You cannot miss visiting this church, which is still under construction. I can recommend booking a ticket in advance online and with an Audio Guide as well, because you will get so much information on the different portals etc. which really enhanced my visit.

Did you know that Barcelona is a little San Francisco? Me neither, until I visited Park Güell! For one part of the park, you need to pay 8€ to get in (this part includes what you can see in the first picture), however, I think that it is not really worth paying this amount of money. The part that you can visit for free is also great, there are amazing views over the city and it´s great for going for a walk.

6. VISIT A GAUDI BUILDING

Ever since dealing with Gaudi in Art Class, it was on my bucket list to visit one of his buildings (either the Casa Mila or the Casa Batllo). I ended up going to the Casa Batllo, because you can visit the entire building, not just the rooftop terrace (like in the Casa Mila). When you´re into architecture like me, I cannot recommend visiting the Casa Batllo enough, it was so amazing and stunning to see Gaudi´s work with my own eyes.

7. FONT MAGIC

The Magic Fountain might not seem like something special during the day, however, there is a light and water show taking place from thursday to sunday evening from 9:30 pm which is simply breathtaking. The entire show is accompanied by music - both recent songs from the charts, but also classics. You defenitely shouldn´t miss the show.  I can recommend going to the fountain about 30 minutes before the show starts to find a place to sit.

WHERE TO SHOP:

EL BORN: für kleine Boutiquen und Concept Stores // for small boutiques, concept stores etc.

PASSEIG DE GRACIA:  für jeden erdenklichen Designerstore // for all the designer stores that you can think of

RAMBLA DE CATALUNYA: (parallel zum Passeig de Gracia) für große Ketten wie Zara, Mango, Brandy Melville etc. // ( parallel to Passeig de Gracia) for high street stores such as Zara, Mango, Brandy Melville etc.

The streets surounding the Placa Catalunya are great to find all the major high street shops (H&M, Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius etc.)  including so many Spanish stores that I have never heard of before.

WHERE TO EAT:

Barcelona is a foodie´s paradise, so I dedicated an entire post to the best lunchspots in Barcelona which you can find here.
