DIY: GUCCI INSPIRED FLORAL EMBROIDERED SNEAKERS

I´ve talked about my new-found love for floral embroidery on here before a couple of times (like here, here and here). After hand-embroidering a pair of denim jeans, recreatig the amazing floral Gucci sneakers was next on the agenda. I already came up with the idea in early March, but I couldn´t figure out how to secure the embroidery to the shoe, but in the beginning of April, I suddenly had an idea how I could make it work. Within a couple of weeks, I´ve worked everything out and I am absolutely loving how the shoes turned out. In total, I paid about 30€ for everything including shoes (I found them in the sale for 17€) which is obviously a bargain compared to the Gucci ones for about 550€.
Without blabbing on too much, I´ll just start telling you how I made them.

 WHAT YOU NEED:
  • a piece of linen, preferably the color of your sneakers (I bought 20 cm)
  • fabric glue ( I used this one)
  • several colors of embroidery yarn ( I used 7)
  • an embroidery frame
  • a pair of canvas sneakers+
  • Vliesofix
  • a sewing machine
  • needle and thread

1. CREATE A TEMPLATE
The first step is to create a template for the embroidery using your shoe as an example. I took a piece of paper, outlined the side of the shoe where I wanted the embroidery to be and then just got creative with the look of the embroidery. Just make sure you leave 2-4mm space on the outline of the embroidery, because we are going to need that space later on.

 2. CUT OUT THE TEMPLATE AND TRACE IT ON SOME FABRIC
Next, you cut out the template you created in step 1. Pin it on the fabric that is going to be the base of the embroidery with some needles and trace the outlines with a pencil.

 3. ONE WORD: EMBROIDER!
Now it´s time to embroider and fill the outlines with some beautiful stitching! I don´t think I am the person to teach you how to do embroidery, because I don´t even know if I´m doing it right, but I will link you some helpful video here, here and here.

 4. CUT OUT THE EMBROIDERY AND IRON IT ON SOME FABRIC
Once you are done with the embroidery, cut it out leaving enough space around it. Because I thought that the embroidery itself wouldn´t stick to the shoe very well, I ironed it on the same fabric I used as the base with some Vliesofix. Like this, the side of the embroidery that we are going to glue on the shoe is nice and even.

5. CUT IT OUT AGAIN AND SEW ALOND THE EDGES
For the next step, cut it out again, this time, however, only leaving a couple of milimeters to the actual embroidery. Once you´re done with that, sew along the edge with a cross stitch to avoid the edge from fringing. I actually sew along the edge twice for a sleeker look.

 6. GLUE IT ON THE SHOE
Last, but not least, glue the embroidery on the shoe using fabric glue. Make sure to get a stron glue (I used this one), because at first, I bought a glue that was too weak (this one) and the embroidery didn´t stick to the shoe at all, which would be such a bummer!

After completing these 6 steps, you´re done with your Gucci inspired floral sneakers. I am head over heels for them and I could wear them every day (seriously!) and surprisingly, they work with so much! The other day, I tried on a grey and beige checked blazer at Zara combined with black jeans an a white shirt and the shoes looked fab with it. So much love and quite easy to recreate. Have fun!
