Have you heard of Shakshuka? I certainly hadn´t just until about 2 months ago, when I saw it pop up on various Instagram pictures. Since I am always on the hunt for something new to try - also food wise - I really wanted to make Shakshuka myself.
Apparently, Shakshuka is usually eaten for breakfast, but with the sweet-tooth that I have, I am not the biggest fan of savory breakfast. But with it mainly containing tomatoes and paprika, I thought it would make a nice lunch as well - and it did! Also, it´s not hard to make and doesn´t take ages to prepare. So Shakshuka ticked all of my mental boxes a dish needs for me to love it and here is the recipe! Enjoy with some white bread - as we did - or some pita bread.
WHAT YOU NEED
- 1 onion
- 1 garlic glove
- 1 chili pepper
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp cardamom
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 can of tomato cubes (500 gr)
- 1 tbsp of tomato paste
- 1 paprika
- 4 eggs
- olive oil
- Peel the onion and garlic and cut them in small pieces. Wash the chili pepper, remove the seeds and cut it into small streaks.
- Add the cumin together with the onion, garlic and chili pepper in a pan and roast it for about 3 minutes.
- Cut the paprika into small cubes as well and add it to the pan as well as the cinnamon stick, cardamom and tomato paste. Roast, once again, for 5 minutes.
- Add the tomato cubes and let it simmer for 12 minutes.
- Last, but not least, add the eggs to the pan and poach them for 5-6 minutes and you are done!
Oh woooow - that looks soooo delicious and amazing. I am really hungry now and I think I have to try it :)

I´ve actually never tried Shakshuka in a restaurant, so I am really excited to find a place in the area that serves it, so I can see how that tastes. But homemade Shakshuka also tastes great and it´s almost foolproof.
